Vicki Mitchison- Setting Manager
Hi, I’m Vicki!
I’ve been working in childcare for over 18 years… which is terrifying when I see some of the tiny humans I looked after all grown up and absolutely smashing life now. Seriously, where did the time go?!
I absolutely LOVE my job. There’s nothing better than giving warmth, love, and care to all the little people I’m lucky enough to spend my days with- plus the occasional glitter explosion, paint disaster, or giggle fit. Pre-School isn’t just my workplace… it’s my heart.
I joined Wheldrake Pre-School in 2021, loved it so much that my family and I moved to the village ourselves. The kind, nurturing, and caring community here is woven into everything we do, and I’m so proud of the Pre-School we’ve built together. It’s full of curiosity, laughter, learning… and yes, the occasional sticky handprint!
At home, I live with my husband, two daughters and Pre-School in my head 24/7. I'm also blessed with two wonderful step children too! I’m endlessly grateful to do a job I adore, surrounded by a team, children, and community that make every single day feel magical.
Ruth Craven- Deputy Setting Manager
Hi, I’m Ruth!
I’m a proud mum of two lovely girls, two cats, and one very lovable sausage dog. I’ve been part of this wonderful Pre-School for four years now, and I’ve genuinely loved every single second.
My passion for working with children began after becoming a parent myself, and helping children flourish has become something truly close to my heart. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a hardworking, supportive, and dedicated team. Every day, I see how our care and commitment help the children grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence. I’m so proud to be part of this pre-school family.
I actually attended Wheldrake Pre-School myself when I was younger, and I must have enjoyed it so much that I decided to come back and work here 25 years later. Some people move on – I chose to make a very enthusiastic return
Abie Handley- Practitioner
Hi, I’m Abie!
I live with my husband, our three wonderful children, and very importantly, my eight beloved chickens, who I would quite happily spend all of my free time with if I could.
I’ve been part of the Wheldrake Pre-School team for five years, but my connection to the preschool began long before I worked there. All three of my children attended Wheldrake, and they absolutely loved their time here, which made the setting feel like home to our family.
Stepping into a role on the team felt like a natural next step.
I truly love working in early years education. Every child brings something different to the room, and getting to know their individual personalities is the best part of my job. Watching them grow in confidence, find their interests, and discover the world in their own unique ways is something I feel very lucky to be part of.
Whether I’m supporting the children, chatting with families, or sharing stories about my ever-entertaining chickens, I’m always happy to be part of such a warm and welcoming community.
Lisa Raddall- Practitioner
Hi I'm Lisa,
I’ve lived in the village for 23 years and have two grown-up children of my own. I came into childcare after a career in Banking, it didn’t take long for me to realise I’d completely found my calling. Since then, I’ve never looked back! I’ve spent six years at WOOSC, three years here, and I also work at a local nursery.
Before all of that, I started out as a parent helper at the village school with my youngest daughter, eventually becoming a TA and a dinner lady. One way or another, I’ve always found myself surrounded by children, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love getting to know them, watching their personalities unfold, and helping them feel safe, supported, and confident as they grow.
I’m known as the resident chief storyteller — mainly because I spend so much time in the book corner that I’m practically part of the furniture! Whether it’s bringing characters to life, putting on silly voices, or reading the same favourite book for the tenth time, it genuinely brings me joy. There’s nothing quite like seeing children lose themselves in a story or sharing a big giggle over a funny page.
At heart, I just love looking after little people. Being a calm, reassuring presence for them (and occasionally a very silly one) is the best part of my day.
Laura Strathearn- Practitioner
Hi, I’m Laura!
I feel very lucky to work at Wheldrake Pre-School - a lovely setting that’s been part of my life since my first child was born nearly eleven years ago.
At home, I live with my husband, our two amazing children and our dog, Henry. We’re a family who loves being outdoors and spending time exploring nature, especially visiting National Trust sites around the country. We also enjoy travelling to different European cities and trying out new foods along the way! When I’m not off on family adventures, I love reading, cooking, and anything creative.
I’m a qualified teacher and have worked with children for over 16 years. I also have a degree in English Language and Linguistics, and I’ve always been really interested in how children learn and develop language.
I’m passionate about helping children grow in confidence, curiosity, and creativity, and I love being part of an environment where every child feels happy, supported, and excited to learn. Whether it’s singing songs, sharing stories, getting hands-on with activities, or simply watching imaginations come to life, I really enjoy being a part of children’s development.
Sandra Winfield- Business Manager
Hi, I'm Sandra!
I’ve been involved with Wheldrake Pre-School since 2001, and have been the Business Manager since 2008. I handle all the behind-the-scenes admin - everything from registering new families and organising funding to managing finances and keeping the admin side of Pre-School running smoothly.
All four of my (now grown-up) daughters started their journeys here, so the Pre-School holds lots of special memories for me. Although I mostly work from home, I love popping in to see the team and chat with children.
Outside of Pre-School, I also work at the University of York and enjoy walking, choir singing, reading, and travel.
And behind the scenes we also have our Trustees
